Hip-Hop Theatre: Recognition Without Permission | Jonzi D | TEDxWarwick
Description: Jonzi D is the Artistic Director of Breakin' Convention and Jonzi D Projects, and one of the pioneers of British hip hop culture, rapping and b-boying since its genesis in the early 80s.
Since graduating from the London Contemporary Dance School, Jonzi has been committed to the development of Hip Hop theatre. He was an Associate Artist at The Place and has performed and choreographed widely in the UK and Europe, Israel, USA and South Africa.
'Jonzi D sums up the dilemma of many second-generation immigrants in his 1998 performance piece Aeroplane Man, where, fleeing racism at home in London, he tries to make sense of his identity on an imagined plane trip to Grenada, Jamaica, New York and Africa. Performing the piece at the Apollo is a risk for Jonzi – are the Harlem audience going to tune in to the experience of an east Londoner’s troubled identity? He needn’t have worried; after a bravura performance they are on their feet.' - Financial Times

PROJECT WEST: Webisode #1 The First Meeting
Description: Project West: Webisode #1 highlights the first community meeting of Project West: Secrets of West Coast Hip Hop. This is 15 minutes of a 3 hour meeting.
Project West: Secrets Of West Coast Hip Hop-- is a museum exhibit, film festival, and cultural event, celebrating West Coast Hip Hop Culture. Slated for Fall of 2013 at the Mayme A. Clayton Libray @ Museum in Culver City California.
PROJECT WEST is a museum exhibit, with film and street festival components, that explores the synthesis of dance, music, art and "street culture" from various communities, from California to Washington state, into the movement now known as west coast hip-hop. This exhibit charts the west coast's separate but equal narrative with origins in funk and the dance scenes of the 70's, all the way to gangsta rap's dramatic rise in the 90's, on its way to becoming pop culture's most dominant influence worldwide.
Through a partnership with the Mayme A. Clayton Library & Museum and Ultra Wave Media, this exhibit will look at west coast dance, rap, dj'ing, graffiti, fashion, and cinema styles from a historical perspective. The curators mash the digital storytelling of the YouTube video-game generation with "old school", hands-on production styles. Visitors to this highly interactive exhibit can catch film screenings, panel discussions, workshops, tours, and even a street festival. Hip-Hop's generation gap will be bridged as the "old skool" pioneers educate their "new skool" pupils about how things really were, back in the day.
Project West: The Secret History Of West Coast Hip Hop-- will be told primarily through the people who witnessed the evolution firsthand using archival footage, photographs, music, music videos and interviews with experts, trailblazers, stars, scholars, music industry executives and journalists -- many of whom will be speaking for the first time about west coast Hip Hop culture. As a result, the exhibit will blaze new territory, with both fresh and familiar faces, articulating an idiosyncratic west coast perspective that for too long has been ignored within mainstream hip-hop.
PROJECT WEST: Webisode #2: DJ Dion
Description: In 1960 a student in Los Angeles at Dorsey High School named DJ Dion would figure out how to make record hops more interesting by using two turntables. It would evolve into something spectacular! DJ Dion is the father of famous West Coast DJ, Devoux.

Willie "Marine Boy" Estrada (VIDEO BIO 2013)
Description: Questions or concerns regarding this video contact: wilestrada424@gmail.com
This is the true story of Willie Estrada a short Video Bio of his experiences from Gangs to Dance and many of the elements he was exposed to growing up in the South Bronx, New York, USA.
This story will give you a broader perspective as to what it was like to actually live in such devastation and survive during these times. This video gives you a glimpse of what it was like through Willie's eyes and what he had to do to survive the violent environment he endured while growing up in the South Bronx during a time of Chaos.
Willie left the world of dance in the late 70's to work club promotions with David Maldonado, and together they created Face Grand Ballroom. By 1982 Willie went on to run Friday nights at New York City's largest night club, Bond International Casino.
In 2009, Franc Reyes put Willie in touch with Pop Master Fabel and in 2010, Mr. Wiggles (Rock Steady Crew) was convinced that Willie was one of the dancers whom had influenced guys like Hector Berrios on a Rock Team called, "The Rock Masters".
Shortly after, Mr. Wiggles worked with Willie, Wiggles and other members of Rock Steady Crew asked Willie to join them on a European Tour in 2011. They have been working together ever since.
Willie is now traveling the world teaching dance, and sharing his history of how it all started in the early 70's.
